paleBLUEdot was invited to give the Keynote address at Sustainability Works, 2022. The event was Sustainable Stillwater MN's first fundraiser and green awards event. The keynote address provided a high-level review of climate impact projections and underscored the importance for climate action planning at the municipal level and the critical role that volunteers and advocates play in creating high-quality climate action plans.

The Conservation District of Polk County Iowa (PCC) has selected paleBLUEdot to analyze and make recommendations for sustainable practices and policies within PCC operations and to develop a Polk County Conservation Sustainability Plan. paleBLUEdot’s work will begin with assisting the Polk County Conservation with a data analysis of current PCC sustainability projects, greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and developing a vulnerability assessment to understand the largest climate risks facing the organization.

Kane County, Illinois has selected paleBLUEdot for the county’s first countywide Climate Action Implementation Plan (CAIP). Kane County has a population of 515,000 people and over 30 cities and villages. The plan will create a toolkit for establishing community specific, detailed plans to guide Kane County municipalities in implementing action and strategies to fight climate change in their communities.

paleBLUEdot was selected by West Central Initiative to support regional climate action planning. The effort will result in a Climate Action Plan for Minnesota Economic Development Region 4. The final plan will include individual climate action plans and implementation toolkits for all nine counties (Becker, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin) and the White Earth Nation of Region 4

paleBLUEdot Selected for City of Edina Climate Action Plan

paleBLUEdot was selected by the City of Edina for the community’s first Climate Action Plan.  Situated immediately southwest of Minneapolis in Hennepin County, Edina has a population of 47,941. It is a first-ring suburb known for its shopping and dining, its parks and recreational facilities and the excellent quality of life for residents.

The City of Edina wishes to review its current greenhouse gas emission reduction goals (from 2007, 25% reduction by 2025, 80% reduction by 2050) and establish a pathway of actions to achieve these goals.  The City Council has engaged paleBLUEdot in preparing an assessment of local greenhouse gas emissions and climate impacts and to develop the City’s first Climate Action Plan. 

The paleBLUEdot Climate Action Plan effort will include:

  1. Development of community-wide and City Operations Greenhouse Gas Inventory and analysis for years 2013, 2016, and 2019.

  2. Development of a Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment meeting Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) requirements

  3. Conducting a community-wide Ground Cover, Heat Island, and Carbon Sequestration Assessment and Recommendations report.

  4. Development of a community-wide Renewable Energy Potentials study

  5. Creation of a community-wide Climate Action Baseline Assessment and Strategic Goals Recommendations report defining a community-specific emissions mitigation targets and goals

  6. Recommend community-specific climate adaptation and mitigation actions that the City and community can undertake with an analysis of barriers and opportunities.

  7. Leading Climate Action Planning Public Engagement

  8. Development of the Climate Action Plan and Implementation Matrix

  9. Identification of Top Climate Action project priorities for the first year of climate action implementation

paleBLUEdot Selected for Town of Hartford Carbon Neutral Climate Action Plan

paleBLUEdot was selected by the Town of Hartford for the community’s first Climate Action Plan.  The Town of Hartford, Vermont is a community of around 10,000 residents. The Town has been dedicated to climate and energy issues for many years, and its focus on these topics has become increasingly strong in recent years. In 2007, Hartford became one of the first towns in the State of Vermont to form an Energy Commission, dedicated to reducing energy consumption and increasing Hartford’s share of renewable energy.  

In 2019, the Town passed a ballot resolution committing the Town municipal operations to Carbon Neutrality by 2027 and establishing a path towards community-wide carbon neutrality by 2030.  The Town Selectboard has engaged paleBLUEdot in preparing an assessment of local greenhouse gas emissions and climate impacts and to develop the Town’s first Carbon Neutral Climate Action Plan. 

The paleBLUEdot Climate Action Plan effort will include:

  1. Development of community-wide and Village Operations Greenhouse Gas Inventory and analysis for years 2013, 2016, and 2019.

paleBLUEdot was selected by the Village of Northbrook for the Village’s first Climate Action Plan.  Northbrook is a suburban Chicago community of approximately 35,000 residents and a diverse economic base located in the northern section of Cook County, Illinois.  The Village has a tradition of being a leader in addressing environmental issues and has become increasingly concerned about the global climate crisis.

Over the course of the past decade, the Village has been refining its local policies to address environmental issues.  The Village of Northbrook now wishes to take more directed steps in addressing the climate crisis on a local level.  The Board of Trustees has requested that the Department of Development & Planning Services to engage paleBLUEdot in preparing an assessment of local environmental conditions and the identification of steps that can be taken to ensure Northbrook is not only resilient to climate changes, but takes positive steps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions locally. 

The paleBLUEdot Climate Action Plan effort will include:

paleBLUEdot was selected by the City of Bloomington for the City’s first Climate Vulnerability Assessment and Climate Action Plan.  Bloomington is nestled in the rolling hills of southern Indiana and home to 85,000 residents and serves as a home away from home for tens of thousands of Indiana University students and alumni.  

The City of Bloomington has a long-standing commitment to sustainability. City programs and community efforts focused on energy conservation, waste reduction, solar development, and the growth of the local food market have established Bloomington as a regional sustainability leader.  The City of Bloomington addresses sustainability through careful attention to environmental, economic, and social equity issues. Sustainability and livability are guiding principles and are considered to be foundational to quality, long-lasting economic and community development

Bloomington’s vision is to be climate resilient, leading in the social and economic transitions necessary to reduce citywide greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement, while protecting Bloomington’s natural ecosystems, most vulnerable populations, and economic vitality against the increasing impacts of climate change. 

The Climate Vulnerability Assessment will provide a detailed review of the anticipated climate-related risks to people, infrastructure, and natural resources in Bloomington and Monroe County. The assessment will also consider the potential impacts on the local energy, economic, and food systems due to a changing climate.  This assessment will detail how climate change is affecting Bloomington now, identify current and future climate vulnerabilities, and how those vulnerabilities will change in coming decades.  The plan will also recommend strategies for the City and community to prepare for and adapt to local climate change effects and reduce carbon emissions over the next 10 years.

The paleBLUEdot Climate Action Plan effort will include:

  1. Detailed review of City Greenhouse Gas Inventory and characteristics

This session provided a broad review of resilience challenges and opportunities including, identifying the impacts these changes will have on Midwest communities, practical things planners can do to advance resilience their communities, and a survey of the following case studies.

paleBLUEdot Selected for City of Dubuque Climate Action Plan

paleBLUEdot was selected by the City of Dubuque for the City’s 2020 updated climate action planning effort.  The City of Dubuque is located on the Mississippi River in northeastern Iowa, adjacent to Illinois and Wisconsin. As Iowa’s oldest city, Dubuque is a community well known for its historic and architectural beauty. The City is approximately 30 square miles in area, with a population approaching 60,000 persons.

The City of Dubuque government works in collaboration with private and non-profit sectors to develop the principles of sustainability. Dubuque’s framework for sustainability is centered on economic prosperity, environmental integrity, and social/cultural vibrancy.  The Climate Action Plan will be developed to review and confirm or update the City’s 50% by 2030 reduction goal based on current climate science.  When completed, the Climate Action Plan will be used to guide the City’s actions over the next 10 years, mapping out city-wide and City Operations energy, climate, and sustainability strategies.

The paleBLUEdot Climate Action Plan effort will include:

  1. Detailed review of City Greenhouse Gas Inventory and characteristics

  2. Development of greenhouse gas reduction strategies for emissions in the categories of: Buildings and Energy, Transportation, Land Use, Water and Waste Water, Municipal Solid Waste, and Local Food.

paleBLUEdot was selected for the City of Burnsville 2019 Sustainability Guide Plan.  In 2008, the City completed the Burnsville Sustainability Guide Plan (SGP) which articulated practical ideas, activities and strategies in 14 Best Practice Areas for the city organization and the community to help make Burnsville more sustainable.  This planning effort is to build on the success of the 2008 SGP and develop an updated Sustainability Plan mapping out city-wide sustainability strategies to guide the City over the next 10 years.
